On April 12, 2017, the Students of Color Alliance club sponsored “My Brother’s Keeper,” a panel discussion about mentoring boys and young men of color. The moderator was Les Saunders, lecturer of Counselor Education & Family Therapy at Central Connecticut State University. Panelists included:
• Thomas “T.J.” Clarke, II, Council President, City of Hartford
• Philip G. Kane, Jr., Vice-President, US Bank NA
• Sen. Douglas McCrory, D-Hartford & Assistant Principal, Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts
• Kirk Peters, Ed. D., Dean of Student Affairs, Tunxis Community College
• Andre Santiago, Sr. Program Director of Youth Programs, Leadership Greater Hartford
• Darwin Shaw, Teacher and Coach, New Britain High School
President Barack Obama began the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative in 2014 to address the barriers to success faced by young men of color in the United States. Of the initiative, President Obama embraced the challenge of “helping more of our young people stay on track.”

An open-forum discussion on the Election of 2016 and its aftermath, held on March 29. The panel of guest experts included Dr. Marie Clucas, Professor Robert Brown, Dr. Rafaele Fierro, and Professor J.I. Abbot, with Dr. Francis Coan acting as moderator. The panelists and assembled audience engaged in a fruitful, wide-ranging conversation about various aspects of the campaign.
