Student Testimonials

alicjaaliciaphotographyDuring my time at Tunxis I not only learned photography skills I was invited to be part of a larger photography community. My instructors extended opportunities for me to be part of the international professional photography event, Help-Portrait Day. Photographs that I created in my advanced level classes at Tunxis went on to be exhibited and receive such awards as Juror’s Choice in the Winter Student Exhibition and I placed as a finalist in Photographer’s Forum Magazine’s contest.  Through the guidance of the faculty, in my time as a photography student, I was able to enter into a different world where everything is done with patience, slowness and an artistic mood. -Alicja Kosalka, alicjaphotography.com

Always the amateur photographer in my group, I decided at age 50, then a successful, career professional in human services, to push my limits. I enrolled as a part-time student in the Art Department at Tunxis and discovered in the dark room and later, on the computer, that, for me, everything about photography was fun, absorbing and life-expanding.  Mingling and learning from all age students and profiting from the always dedicated and enthusiastic faculty I found the creative tonic I wanted in my life.  In 2003, I was honored to win the Board of Trustees of Community-Technical Colleges Merit Award, continuing after graduation to study photography as an avocation in my home studio.  My camera goes with me everywhere, providing weekends of entertainment and it is a joy to me to be asked to design photography projects and to see my photographs hanging in the homes of family and friends. -Diane McMillin

My time at Tunxis was full of development and discovery. As a double major in fine art and photography, I was able to learn a tremendous amount from my professors about the art community, and many different types of art mediums. My favorite part of my classes were the critiques which were full of discussion and ideas. The professors would inform the students of when there were art contests and gallery openings. I enjoyed participating in those events, they were a great experience and added to my still growing portfolio and resume. A selection of my photographs from my advanced classes were entered and accepted to be displayed in the Tunxis Gallery and the Earthday event Earthstock. My photography was also chosen to be published in Photographers Forum’s worldwide Best of College Photography edition. I also received the Tunxis Academic Discipline Award in Photography. I accredit my success in art to my will to work hard and my wonderful professors. Tunxis truly is full of professors that care and want their students to go on to be successful. -Johanna Pirog, johannapirog.carbonmade.com
